Defining Our Future
I sat in a Twitter Spaces event a few days ago and listened to a group of people devolve from what was a great topic into arguments about how certain things in the burgeoning web3 world are defined. As it started, it seemed most of the speakers began explaining things in a way that I would not have. They used definitions for words that I as a long-term technologist, software developer, and engineer would not have used. Many of their definitions were ambiguous, and quite a few seemed to overlap.

Is there a future for web3 without consensus?
It quickly occurred to me that my definitions for the same words was different. So, like any true anal retentive technology professional I whipped open my trusty browser and started googling. Clickety-Click-Click and what do I get? Sadly, I get four more definitions for the same word. Next page of Google, three more definitions. Then it hit me.
Those of us in the web3 space are philosophers. We are inventing terms, inventing ideas, but are not creating the scientific foundation necessary to take things to the next step. This is the wild west or ancient Greece. Someone starts speaking about microscopic germs and hand washing to save lives, only to be followed up by someone who suggests that the balance of dark humors is off, and by leaching some blood we can fix the problem. Here in the modern world, we know and understand what the right path is, because it has become a science.
Why can’t we see ourselves still doing it? A room full of people creates philosophizers. They are loud, they claim to know, but in all reality they are inventing definitions, inventing ideas as they go, and little do they realize they are marching us away from consensus, away from science, and away for progress.
Enter Cryptopedia Lab. Our first goal is to help course correct the industry. We want to create firm easy to communicate definitions, and to reduce the noise. By engaging users to help us define the industry we can create consensus, and through that consensus begin reduce useless conversations, spur innovation, and ultimately help to advance the science of blockchain, cryptocurrency, and the entire web3 infrastructure.
